Welcome to Savage Arts

Kip headshot 061820.jpg

I was born in Danbury, Connecticut in 1956. When I was one, my family moved east to Old Lyme, a beautiful town on the Connecticut shore. My creative influences were many and started at a young age with my dad, John Hubbard, who was a very talented creative--landscape painter, pencil artist, art restorer and inventor. My sister, Jane Hubbard Jennings, is a successful multimedia artist whose truly breathtaking work has been shown extensively up and down the East Coast for many years. My paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Gates Hubbard, was also an accomplished watercolorist. Many family friends were also painters, sculptors and artisans, including renowned sculptor Elizabeth Gordon Chandler, our next-door neighbor, who founded the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in 1976.

The name Savage Arts pays homage to my late father, born Arthur Rollins Savage in Bath, Maine on January 15, 1921. My dad was adopted by Giles and Elizabeth Hubbard of Pelham, New York soon after his birth. He had a lifelong love of all things creative, from woodworking to painting, drawing, art restoration, and even tinkering and inventing. He was discouraged by his parents from pursuing a career in the arts yet chased his passions throughout his life while working at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut by day. He and I spent thousands of hours in our years together in his basement workshop turning wood, building a large HO model train landscape, and enjoying a deep and loving connection. He was a very special man.

I realize now that when I was a kid, I was heavily influenced by the Old Lyme arts scene. Old Lyme had been a prominent enclave at the turn of the 20th Century beginning with the Connecticut River School. That arts tradition continues today at both the Florence Griswold Museum and the Lyme Art Association

Always a doodler, I began drawing seriously in 2011.  That simple act of putting pencil to paper has opened up a world of fulfillment, joy, and inner healing for me over the past twelve years, and I look forward to creating  much more art in the future. I hope you enjoy my work.

I currently live in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and am so blessed with two amazing daughters.
