UNIVERSE

Welcome to Savage Arts, the drawings and illustrations of abstract pencil artist Kip Hubbard. Here you will find both graphite and colored pencil, some abstract, some more conventional.

Kip Hubbard was born in Danbury, Connecticut and lived in Newtown for the first year of his life. His family moved east to Old Lyme when he was one. Though he didn't discover pencil art until his mid-50's, his creative influences were many and began early. His sister, Jane Jennings, is a successful multimedia artist whose work has been shown extensively up and down the East Coast for decades. His father, John Hubbard, was a reclusive landscape painter, pencil artist, art restorer and inventor. And his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Gates Hubbard, was an accomplished watercolorist.

"I realize now that when I was a boy I was pretty heavily influenced by the Old Lyme arts community," Hubbard says. Old Lyme had been a prominent enclave at the turn of the 20th Century beginning with the Connecticut River School. That great arts tradition continues today at both the Florence Griswold Museum and the Lyme Art Association

"I didn't discover either my capacity or my passion for pencil drawing until 2011 when I was encouraged by my wife to "draw something" one Sunday in August. That simple suggestion has opened up a world of fulfillment, joy, and healing for me for the past decade, and I expect there is much more to come."

A longtime resident of Colorado, Hubbard recently returned to the Roaring Fork Valley from Boulder and lives in Aspen.
